| THE AREA |
To quote Wainwright “The unspoilt village of Low Hartsop has great charm and its environment is one of quiet loveliness“ – built on the industries of mining and farming, Hartsop has many listed buildings and a fascinating history. It has a real “away-from-it-all” quality, yet is set in the heart of the Lake District, making Hartsop an ideal base for exploring the area by foot or by car.
There are so many great walks from the door both level and lofty it is easy to see why Wainwright wrote his first two books on this area. |
Tackle Helvellyn via the vertiginous Striding Edge or follow in the footsteps of the Romans along the High Street ridge. For a less strenuous day out enjoy a cruise on Ullswater, visit nearby historic houses such as Dove Cottage, Townend House and Dalemain, or simply indulge in a little shopping therapy in Ambleside, just 7 miles away. |

This is a wildlife haven and the resident owners are happy to help you spot red squirrels, red deer and even a rare Golden Eagle over the mountains behind in the remote Riggindale valley.
For nightlife after the wildlife, then try Zefferelli’s in Ambleside, an excellent independent cinema, jazz bar and vegetarian Italian restaurant or experience a 3-D aerial tour of the lakes at the I-max cinema at Rheghed, near Penrith. For theatre buffs, there are a broad range of events at The Brewery Arts centre in Kendal and at The Theatre by the lake in Keswick. Enjoy a meal featuring local ingredients at one of the many restaurants in the region which feature regularly in the Good food Guide or try a liquid taste of Cumbria by sampling the ale from one of the regions excellent microbreweries. |
